Appianvs Callvu
Appian is a low-code process automation platform that large enterprises and governments use to build many internal workflow and case management applications on one platform. Callvu is the Completion and Compliance Layer: it orchestrates, routes and decides too, and runs the whole regulated process from the customer's request through the back office to the system of record, with compliance enforced at every step, built by Callvu and live in a few weeks. Appian suits a build-it-yourself platform strategy; Callvu suits institutions that want regulated processes running and enforced without a development program.

What Appian is built for.Sourced from their own pages.
Appian is a public company that provides process automation technology for complex processes in large enterprises and governments; its sales generally target organizations with over 2,000 employees and 2 billion dollars in annual revenue [1]. The platform combines business rules, prebuilt connections, intelligent document processing, RPA, AI, a data fabric and process mining [1]. Case Management Studio provides apps from case intake to resolution [3], document processing skills extract and classify documents, with human review for low-confidence extraction results [4], and Agent Studio, generally available since November 2025, embeds AI agents in processes [2]. In April 2026 Appian adopted MCP, so its agents can connect to external systems and third-party agents can reach the platform [13]. For financial services, Appian markets onboarding, KYC and servicing solutions [5][11] and says its lending solution integrates data from core and legacy systems [6]. Gartner named Appian a Leader in its 2025 Magic Quadrant for Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies [10].
When to choose which
Two different jobs.Pick the one you need.
When to choose Appian
Choose Appian when you want one low-code platform for many internal process applications, built by your own developers or partners such as Accenture, Capgemini and Deloitte [1]. It fits large financial institutions that want a data fabric over existing systems and process mining to find bottlenecks [1], and institutions that need government-grade hosting options [9]. CIBC Mellon, for example, signed an enterprise license in 2026 that includes expanded onboarding on Appian [12].
When to choose Callvu
Choose Callvu when you want the whole regulated process run for you, not built on a platform. Callvu orchestrates the work, routes it by work type, skill and due date, applies rules and policies and manages every decision, and it runs the handoff between the front office and the back office in the same process. It does that with five moves: it prefills from what the core already knows, classifies each request with work type, skill, effort and due date the moment it lands, chases and verifies documents from customers and outside parties on a clock, routes decisions to the Decision Desk, and writes the result back by API. Back-office planning starts the moment the front end starts.
Choose Callvu when compliance must be enforced during the run and the evidence must last. Callvu Studio comes with most regulations already loaded as policies. Each run leaves a Decision Trace and an Audit Trace, immutable and pushed in real time to your GRC and BI tools. And choose Callvu when you do not want a development program: Callvu builds every process, trains your team and stays through launch and ongoing management, live in a few weeks.
Guardrails are not runtime enforcement. Appian logs AI agent usage and guardrail violations [8], and Agent Studio agents pursue goals stated in natural language, using data and tools inside a process [2]. Guardrails limit and record what an AI does while it does the work. Even with guardrails, an AI that runs a step can write wrong data to the system of record, take a path that is not in the workflow, or act compliantly most of the time rather than every time. Callvu does not let AI run the process. A deterministic orchestrator executes every step of a defined workflow and enforces every control before the step runs; AI, yours or Callvu's, only starts a process or evaluates it. The system of record receives only what the workflow allows, and every run is recorded in a Decision Trace and an Audit Trace.
Choose Callvu, too, when time and services cost matter. Appian implementations are delivered by customer developers, partners or Appian's implementation team, and third parties provide a significant portion of its deployment services [1]. Callvu's license includes white-glove design, implementation, maintenance and optimization for as long as it runs, with no separate services project, and Callvu goes live in a few weeks: PSEG Long Island went live in 4 weeks, and Phoenix Insurance integrated all core systems in 4 weeks.
Side by side
The verifiable facts.Nothing else.
Every cell about Appian is sourced from its own public pages. Runtime enforcement and the handoff lead the table because they are where the two differ most.
| Capability | Appian | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Completion and Compliance Layer between every front door and the system of record | Process automation and orchestration platform for complex processes [1] |
| Runtime compliance enforcement | Yes. A deterministic orchestrator runs every step; AI never runs the process. Every regulation and company policy is enforced on every step while the work runs, whether a person or an AI started it; a step that fails a control does not run. A Decision Trace and an Audit Trace for every run | Not a platform capability. Agent Studio agents inherit platform guardrails and are embedded in processes for governance and auditability of agent behavior, and business rules are built into each application by your team. No policy layer enforces every regulation and company policy on every step of every process [2] |
| Front-to-back-office handoff | Yes, end to end: prefill from the core, classify the work, chase and verify documents, route decisions to the Decision Desk and write back to the system of record. Back-office planning starts the moment the front end starts | Built per application by your developers; Portals for intake [7] |
| Orchestration, routing, rules and decisioning | Yes: workflow orchestration, routing by work type, skill and due date, rules and policies, and human decisions in the Decision Desk | Yes: low-code workflow, case management, business rules and routing [1] |
| Who it is sold to | Regulated institutions of every size, from community banks and credit unions to large enterprises | Large enterprises and governments; sales generally target organizations with over 2,000 employees and 2 billion dollars in annual revenue (per its 10-K) [1] |
| Customer-facing intake | Intake from web, branch, phone, visual IVR, AI chat or a CRM event, prefilled from the core so the customer only answers what is missing | Appian Portals: public web apps for starting workflows and submitting information [7] |
| Documents from customers and outside parties | Requests each missing item from the right party on a clock, reads it on arrival (OCR) and checks it against what the case needs | Tracks, uploads and verifies required documents with approval flows (Connected Onboarding) [11] |
| Document reading | Reads documents on arrival and checks the right form, signatures and dates against the case | Extraction and classification AI skills with confidence-based routing to human review [4] |
| AI agents | Callvu AI chat or your own AI agent can start a governed process; six evaluator agents assess every action before it runs, whether a person or an AI started it | Agent Studio agents embedded in processes (generally available Nov 2025) [2] |
| AI guardrails vs deterministic execution | Deterministic execution, not guardrails: AI never runs the process. A deterministic orchestrator executes every step and enforces every control before it runs, so nothing unchecked reaches the system of record and no step outside the workflow can happen. A Decision Trace and an Audit Trace for every run | AI usage audit log, optional prompt and response log, guardrail violation log; retained up to 7 days per documentation [8] |
| Deployment and professional services | White-glove design, implementation, maintenance and optimization included in the license, for as long as it runs; no separate services project. Live in a few weeks: PSEG Long Island went live in 4 weeks, and Phoenix Insurance integrated all core systems in 4 weeks | Built by your developers, Appian's implementation team or partners; third parties provide a significant portion of deployment services, and strategic partners include Accenture, Capgemini and Deloitte (per its 10-K) [1] |
| Deployment | Hosted by Callvu | Appian Cloud, Appian Government Cloud, or self-managed [9] |
Using both together
Keep what works.Add the layer that finishes it.
Appian can keep the internal automation it already runs. Callvu runs the customer-facing request and the handoff around it: prefill, chase and verify, the human decision in the Decision Desk, and the write back to Appian and the core by API. Appian receives complete work, and every run carries its own Decision Trace and Audit Trace. Where you do not run a separate workflow platform, Callvu runs the whole process on its own.
